Versus is built privacy-first. No accounts, no tracking pixels, no advertising network. This page is the full story.
1. The short version
- We don’t require an account.
- We don’t sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers.
- We never see your browsing history. The extension only activates on Amazon product pages.
- The only data leaving your device is the public product info (title, price, rating, reviews) we send to our AI service to generate summaries.
2. What the extension reads
When you’re on an Amazon product page, the content script reads publicly visible details: product title, price, image, star rating, review count, breadcrumbs, and a sample of customer reviews. This happens locally in your browser.
3. What gets sent to our servers
When you click Compare, we send the scraped product details to our serverless API on Vercel, which forwards them to a large language model (Groq) to generate review summaries and a verdict. We don’t attach your IP, browser fingerprint, or any identifier beyond a short-lived rate limit token.
Requests are not logged with personal data. AI providers may temporarily store request payloads to detect abuse, per their own retention policies.
4. Shared comparison links
If you click See on web, the extension saves a snapshot of that comparison to our database (MongoDB Atlas) and gives you a shareable URL like shop-versus.com/?id=comp_xxx. The snapshot contains only the product data shown on screen — no personal info. You can ask us to delete a saved comparison anytime by emailing the link to us.
5. Local storage
The extension uses Chrome’s storage.session to keep your in-progress comparison alive between popup opens. This data lives only in your browser and is cleared when you close Chrome.
6. Cookies and analytics
The extension itself uses no cookies. The marketing site (shop-versus.com) uses minimal, privacy-respecting analytics to count page views — no cross-site tracking. We use a self-hosted analytics service and Microsoft Clarity for aggregated usage insights (heatmaps, session replays). Clarity does not track you across other sites and does not use the data for advertising.
7. Affiliate links
When you click through from a Versus comparison to an Amazon product page, we may append an Amazon Associates tag to the URL. If you go on to buy something, Amazon pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps fund the AI requests that power the comparisons. Affiliate tags are appended client-side and do not change which products you see, the order they appear in, or any of the analysis we generate.
8. Children
Versus isn’t directed at children under 13 and we don’t knowingly collect data from them.
9. Changes
If this policy changes materially, we’ll update the date above and call it out on the homepage. The full version history lives in the public extension repo.
